Lucas joined BRIBURN after moving to Maine and starting his architecture career in Portland where he worked on small to medium scale commercial projects as well as historic renovations. Prior to practicing architecture, Lucas was working as an artist and art educator, where he found himself being drawn to more functional endeavors such as furniture, renovating a garage studio, and customizing motorcycles. During his research into the architecture profession, he learned about the impact poorly designed buildings have upon energy consumption, building waste, and poor health of occupants. This propelled him to make the leap into architecture, a profession in which he felt he could make a difference. During his time at Cornell University, Lucas was a teaching assistant leading sections of digital representation and structural systems classes. He also was a teaching associate during the summer college program for high school students, where he introduced the students to design thinking, drawing and modeling concepts, and the architecture profession.
